THE LONDON AMBLER IS….

Mike Althorpe, an urban historian, architectural researcher, educator and story teller with a passion for the history, streets and buildings of the greatest city on earth.

 

With a background in fine art and architectural history, Mike has spent the past 18 years producing a variety of built environment events, publications, exhibitions and outreach projects. Between 2006 - 2009 he was part of architectural think tank Building Futures and from 2011-2015 was programmes curator at the RIBA and produced the exhibitions ‘A Place To Call Home’, ‘The Brits Who Built The Modern World’ and ‘Mackintosh.’

Since 2016 he has worked with Karakusevic Carson Architects and in 2017 co-authored ‘Social Housing’ and curated the exhibition of the same name in London in 2017 and at New York’s Center for Architecture in 2018. In 2019 he was the recipient of RIBA Research Fund and published ‘Revolutionary Low Rise’ – a publication exploring international low rise, high density housing with Abigail Batchelor and in 2019 authored ‘Public Housing Works.’

Mike is a public speaker and has given talks and lectures at the RIBA and the Barbican in London and at the AIA Centre for Architecture in New York and has contributed to radio and television programmes.
